A vast AVA across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains around Lubbock, established in 1993 and covering more than 8 million acres on the flat, elevated Llano Estacado. Most vineyards sit at 3,000–4,000 feet, where intense sunshine, low humidity, sandy soils, and cool nights create ideal grape-growing conditions. This is the workhorse of Texas viticulture, supplying an estimated 80 percent of the state’s wine grapes — standout Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, and Roussanne. Most Hill Country wineries, including many around Fredericksburg, source a large share of their fruit here.
