Tasting Note: The 2024 Texas Sangiovese presents a nuanced and savory aromatic profile, with notes of dried herbs and subtle florals unfolding over a gently earthy foundation. The bouquet is inviting yet restrained, offering a sense of quiet complexity that continues to evolve in the glass.

On the palate, cherry and vibrant red fruit takes the lead, supported by a lively acidity that brings both freshness and structure. Layers of roasted coffee and sun-dried tomato emerge, adding depth and a savory, umami-driven character. The extended maceration contributes to a well-defined tannin structure, fine-grained and integrated, while the measured use of French oak lends a subtle warmth without overshadowing the fruit.

The finish is persistent and balanced, carrying through both the wine’s bright acidity and its savory undertones. This vintage reflects a poised and thoughtful expression of Texas Sangiovese: structured, versatile, and distinctly expressive of its origin.

More Information: The juice was in contact with the skins for a total of seventeen days, including a 3-day cold soak, 7-day ferment, and 7 days extended maceration. The wine was then aged for thirteen months in 17% new French oak and 83% neutral oak barrel. The residual sugar is 1.2 g/l and the alcohol is 13.5% by volume.

Sangiovese is an ancient Tuscan red wine grape that is the only grape allowed in the famous wines of the Brunello de Montalcino DOCG and must the majority component of wine of the Chianti DOCG in Italy. Flavors in Sangiovese can vary a lot depending on the terroir, but common descriptors include red cherry, raspberry, plum, and sometime tomato, accompanied by earthy undertones of dried herbs, tobacco, and leather. The balance of fruity and earthy flavors is enhanced by vibrant acidity.

The Region

Texas High Plains
Texas
United States

A vast AVA across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains around Lubbock, established in 1993 and covering more than 8 million acres on the flat, elevated Llano Estacado. Most vineyards sit at 3,000–4,000 feet, where intense sunshine, low humidity, sandy soils, and cool nights create ideal grape-growing conditions. This is the workhorse of Texas viticulture, supplying an estimated 80 percent of the state’s wine grapes — standout Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, and Roussanne. Most Hill Country wineries, including many around Fredericksburg, source a large share of their fruit here.
