Grape Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with supporting Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Five Species is a Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant Bordeaux blend that reflects the warmth and structure of South Africa’s Western Cape. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with expressive aromas of Moyer plum and raspberry jam, layered with classic notes of pencil shavings and cedar.

On the palate, the wine is polished and medium-to-full bodied, balancing ripe dark fruit with savory nuances of graphite and oak. Supple tannins and fresh acidity create a poised structure, carrying the flavors through a smooth, lingering finish marked by plum, cedar, and subtle spice.

Approachable yet structured, the 2023 Five Species offers both immediate enjoyment and the potential to evolve gracefully over the coming years.

Pairing Suggestions:  Smoked brisket, grilled ribeye, herb-crusted lamb, roasted mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses.

More Information: The return of one of our most popular wines ever, the 2023 Five Species is a Bordeaux-style blend in a softer, plusher style of wine that can be enjoyed without the need for long-term aging. The grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch and Paarl, hand-picked to ensure only the best grapes were used, and matured for fourteen months in a combination of 95% French oak and 5% American oak.

The Region

Stellenbosch
Western Cape
South Africa

South Africa’s most celebrated wine district, about 45 km east of Cape Town, spread across mountain foothills and valleys with granite-rich, ancient, well-draining soils and eight distinct wards. High sunshine, moderating sea and mountain influences, and varied terroir make it the country’s benchmark for structured, cellar-worthy reds. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most-planted grape and its calling card — in varietal and Bordeaux-blend form — alongside Merlot, Syrah, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay.
